sites to get books and stories from

Hi, I thought I would share a few of the sites I use to get reading material from. There are two sites that are conspicuous because of their absence. The first is web braille service provided by the Library of Congress; this site's absence is due to my own ignorance: I couldn't figure out how to cite it. The second site is www.bookshare.org, that is because I believe that bookshare's philosophy contradicts the initial web as it was conceived, namely to freely exchange information and services. Therefore, as a point of honour I do not belong to bookshare, nor will I endorse their site as long as they charge, and library cards are still free.

Now, on to the list. If you have any difficulties with any of these links let me know and I'll see what I can do.

http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/
This is the "online books page". It is updated daily, and let's us know about new books that have been put
on the internet recently. It has an extensive database that is searchable.

http://www.gutenberg.org/
This is the infamous Gutenberg Project. This is what the internet was originally designed for. Truly, a world wide
library.

http://gutenberg.net.au/
This is Project Gutenberg's sister project in Australia. The Ausies have a
different copyright schema than we do in the United States, and you can find some books here that you can't find
in America. For example, Margret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind.

http://www.audio-bible.com/home.html
This is a place that has a recorded bible online. The reader is Alexander
Scourby, the finest voice God ever made.

http://www.aphelion-webzine.com/
This is a bimonthly science fiction magazine mainly printing new fiction in the
genre.

http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/
Another sci fi magazine with some really good fiction.

http://www.freesfonline.de/
Hundreds and hundreds of short stories in the area of science fiction. It's a
good idea to check out their "new listings" section periodically, as it is well
maintained.

http://www.blackmask.com/
This is an extensive collection of some of the worst literature ever written--
and some of the best. Check it out. There is a great collection of Dashield
Hammett stories here.

http://www.bnl.com/shorts/
This site has some real classic short stories. Sadly, it's no longer maintained, so
what you see is what you get.

http://shortstory.byethost6.com/
Another short story page, not as good as the previous one, but it fills a gap.
Warning: tons of ads to work your way through on this page.

http://www.poetry-online.org/index.htm
Unfortunately, I only go here when I'm depressed, and poetry reflects my
depression amazingly well. This site has the best collection of poetry I've seen.

http://www.horrorking.com/index.html/
A Steven King fan page.

http://www.revolutionsf.com/fiction/archives.html/
an online magazine that has some good fiction.

http://www.praxagora.com/stevet/fdnc/
This is an online book about the future of computing. It's thought provoking,
but so what. Thinking really doesn't hurt that much.

Wow. I'll have to check all those out. *smiles* Personally, I like Bookshare. I don't like the fact of having to pay for it, but I think considering that the books are already scanned, I just think of it like that. I'm paying a fixed price per year to have access to most books I would usually otherwise have to spend more money going to the library for or buying, or that I wouldn't even know existed. And then it especially helps when I find a book I'll need for school, because it takes away the hassel of scanning it or highering a reader (which I feel isn't fair personally so I don't do that). Anyway, just my opinion on this. *smiles*

try www.audiobooksforfree.com or www.audible.com or .co.uk if in the UK. as for reading material being free, it's the same on the net as is in the shops, you pay for some books and not for other books. as for the net being free, that's outdated in my view.

Excellent ideas but I heard on In Touch, that audiobooks for free have only abridged copies on offer.

Post 5 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Sunday, 16-Apr-2006 23:15:25

I went to www.audiobooksforfree.com and registered--you apparently do have to register to see what they have. It doesn't look as if they had more abridged books than anywhere else. But, of course, I didn't download each one to check it out.

I did download a book just to check out the process. It was fairly easy. However, you have to download each file separately, which is rather time-consuming.

Hmm ok well the set up sounds better than it did on In Touch, which tends to be negative anyway

Hey Bob, thanks for the site list. I'll definetly be checking these out.

If you are looking for the more erotic stories and books you can visit www.nifty.org or www.literotica.com

There's always www.asstr.org from the alt.sex.stories.moderated news group.

Yeah, it all appears to be public domain, but still some cool stuff to be had. Thank you for sharing these good reading resources!

Oo! I love all this cool info! Thanks so much for sharing. I'm going to really work on checking these sites out!

The person who waid they hated downlaoding files to be consuming, try downlaoding more then one file at once, it might work. If you've tried that, then I guess I'm a dork lol. Literotica is great, I like their stories if they're done well. I wish someone would keep putting up sites like that with adult stories theyre's not that many of them.

I don't really understand something about audiobooksforfree.com. I understand that some books are for free but most are not. I didn't see where it says if the book is abridged or full version. Abridged books are one of the worst creations of modern times in my oppinion. Sadly, the internet hasn't been a sorce of getting books for free in ages. Another link for you to try out:
http://www.librivox.org/
They have a limited veriety, but the books are good. All read by volunteers and that's a nice idea I think. Encourage your sighted family and friends to read for them. I talked to someone about it already.

Thanks. I wasn't familiar with this, but it looks really good.

If you know some Spanish, you can get books from
www.tiflolibros.com.ar
To access the books you need to register with the site and send them some document that proves you are really blind, but after that it's fairly easy to get books there.

Post 19 by laurliz1186 (Generic Zoner) on Monday, 21-Aug-2006 15:00:52

Hey! The university of Virginia has an online books page much like UPenn's. Will look up the link and post it. Also, there's a list serv, blindbooks@yahoogroups.com that serves as an exchange of books for the blind community at large.

Isn't that yahoo group for the discussion of books?
